Shape and external appearance


The purple turnip is round in shape.

Properties


The turnip is a low-calorie vegetable with diuretic properties. It is rich in vitamin C (antioxidant and promotes the absorption of iron).

Can go from 5 to 10 cm in diameter.

Scientific and botanical name


Brassica rapa L. (Family Brassicaceae).

Coloring


The skin is white and purple on the leaves. The flesh is white.

Origin & Culture


The turnip is sown in the open ground from June to October in moist, light, sunny soil. Turnips are harvested in the fall and winter.

Smell


Preparation advice


In small cubes the turnip can be braised or fried alone or with other vegetables. It can be steamed or pureed. It is a very popular vegetable in soups and indispensable in the pot-au-feu.

Home preservation


Turnips keep well. They can be stored for up to two weeks in the refrigerator.
